The Hand and Upper Limb Surgery

The Hand and Upper Limb Surgery Discipline of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Hospitals treats all upper limb, hand and wrist conditions. Scaphoid fractures are handled here with a high success rate. It also manages uncommon injuries, such as perilunate dislocations and complex hand crush injuries. Brachial plexus injuries in both adults and children are corrected at the centre. Deformities caused by rheumatoid arthritis are also corrected surgically. Specialists perform tendon transfers for patients who have lost muscle function, restoring movement so they can resume daily activities without pain or disability. Experienced surgeons also operate on glomus tumours of the hand, a rare condition, and the unit has a substantial series of such cases.

Paediatrics Orthopaedics

Paediatric orthopaedic surgeons treat children with developmental dysplasia of the hip and Perthes disease. The unit has the expertise and facilities for complex pelvic procedures. Musculoskeletal deformities in children are corrected to restore function and allow a normal life. Specialty clinics and screening programmes enable early intervention at the appropriate age. Supportive and follow-up care contributes to the best outcomes. Regular outpatient clinics address congenital clubfoot and deformities associated with cerebral palsy.

We Offer the following Services

Shoulder Arthroscopy and Sports Injury

The department handles rotator cuff repairs, shoulder hemiarthroplasty (standard and reverse), shoulder resurfacing, arthroscopic ACL reconstruction and labral repair. Its hand and shoulder surgeons routinely perform knee arthroscopy, including multi-ligament surgery and single- and double-bundle ACL and PCL reconstructions. International surgeons occasionally visit to observe these arthroscopic procedures.

Physiotherapy supports post-operative patients recovering from sports and ligament injuries. A dedicated team with expertise in sports and shoulder cases provides this rehabilitation. Post-operative rehabilitation is considered essential to the surgical care of the department.

Trauma Surgery and Accident Care

The department runs a dedicated trauma and accident care centre, designated as a level 1 trauma centre. It accepts complex accident and trauma referrals from across the state. The centre has three units, each with senior consultants supported by junior consultants, registrars and MS Ortho postgraduates. Patients generally see the same team at follow-up visits, which builds rapport and reduces communication gaps. Surgeons perform five to six trauma operations daily. They manage pelvic and acetabular fractures, polytrauma, periprosthetic fractures and periarticular fractures, among other cases.

Round-the-clock care is available for multiple extremity fractures and polytrauma, supported by trauma surgeons, ICU and nursing teams, and anaesthesiologists. Senior consultants manage complicated implant failures, malunions and nonunions referred from across the country. Plastic, microvascular and cosmetic surgeons support the trauma team for cases involving neurovascular injury. A multidisciplinary team of specialists provides comprehensive care.
